It is still a very powerful weapon in its newest incarnation, being able to not only defeat shields, but overload them, resulting in splash explosion damage.
The designers of Doom Eternal must have been feeling nostalgic, as the Plasma Rifle (as it's now called) made a comeback in the old accordion-looking style as opposed to the sleek, exotic looking weapon it had been in Doom 2016.
It could also light up dark areas, at the cost of precious plasma cells.
It was a fun weapon to play with, giving you some tactical ability as it pushed enemies back, letting someone who was handy with a mouse keep up a direct stream of fire.
